Traffic Signal Funding Available Through Green Light-Go Program

Townships that want to upgrade traffic signals can apply for funding through the state Department of Transportation's (PennDOT) Green Light-Go Program. The deadline for applications is January 11, 2019.
Up to $40 million is available for FY 2018-2019. The program is a reimbursement grant program, and applicants must provide a 20 percent match.
Eligible projects include:
• replacement of bulbs with LEDs;
• traffic signal retiming;
• study and removal of unwarranted traffic signals;
• traffic corridor monitoring;
• installation of innovative technologies;
• communications/connections to traffic management center;
• detection and/or controller upgrades;
• modernization upgrades; and
• intelligent transportation systems.
Funds may be used for planning, pre-construction, and construction activities, including engineering and design, utilities and permitting, right-of-way acquisition, and construction inspection.
Activities that are not eligible for grant funding include new traffic signals, routine maintenance, emergency pre-emption equipment, battery backup, and flashing warning devices.
All projects will be managed locally by the applicant unless otherwise specified by PennDOT. Projects must follow the procedures for liquid fuels projects as set forth in Publication 9.
