Wolf, Coalition Call for Federal Investment in Broadband Access

Friday June 26th, 2020

Gov. Tom Wolf, along with a coalition of 11 governors, is urging the president and congressional leaders to make critical investments to ensure that all Americans have access to broadband internet conductivity, as critical infrastructure is vitally important to the nation’s economic future and national security. A letter sent to the leaders expressed grave concern that the lack of access threatens entire communities, livelihoods, educational access, and quality of health care for the 18 million Americans who lack access.

While the governors noted their appreciation for the federal investment to date, they believe that this is only a down payment on the total investment needed and cited a 2017 Federal Communications Commission estimate of $80 billion to bring high-speed internet access to the remaining areas of the state and a U.S. Department of Agriculture report that estimated it would take $130-$150 billion over five to seven years to adequately support rural coverage and 5G wireless densification.
