EPA Issues Cybersecurity Alert for Drinking Water Systems
Yesterday, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency issued an enforcement alert outlining urgent cybersecurity threats and vulnerabilities to community drinking water systems and the steps these systems need to take to comply with the Safe Drinking Water Act. EPA will increase inspections to ensure that water systems are meeting requirements to regularly assess vulnerabilities, including cybersecurity, and develop emergency response plans.
EPA strongly recommends that system operators take steps to reduce cybersecurity exposures, including the following: reduce exposure to public-facing internet, change default passwords immediately, conduct cybersecurity awareness training, and developing cybersecurity incident response and recovery plans.
