Additional DEP Pilot Projects to Speed Up Permit Processing Time

The state Department of Environmental Protection has announced that it will introduce two new programs to modernize permit processes and reduce permit backlogs. This is in addition to the pilot program launched earlier this year in 10 counties for Chapter 102 permits, which has reduced permit review timelines by an estimated 73 days.

The new Streamlining Permits for Economic Expansion and Economic Development (SPEED) program will give permit applicants the choice to have a DEP-verified, qualified professional conduct the initial review of their application. DEP staff will review the recommendations of the professional and either make a final permit decision or identify technical deficiencies to the applicant.

DEP is also launching a new Chapter 105 Pilot Program for Individual Joint Permit Applications that should reduce application errors and cut the total application process time by 63 days. This program will give review priority to publicly funded energy projects and environmental restoration projects. To read the press release, click here.
