DeFoor Distributes Municipal Pension Aid
Auditor General Timothy L. DeFoor said his department has distributed nearly $405 million in state aid to 1,461 municipalities and regional police departments for municipal pension plans.
DeFoor urged municipalities to ensure that they are contributing the amount owed to their pension plans each year as part of their regular budgeting process. Over 25% of the revenues go to Philadelphia ($102 million). To see pension aid distributions, click here and scroll down to allocation information. Click here for the press release.
The funding is generated by a 2 percent tax on fire and casualty insurance policies sold in Pennsylvania by out-of-state companies. The amount of revenue available for distribution varies from year to year.
“This vital state aid helps reduce the burden on municipalities to make their legally mandated pension contributions so there is money available when their police, fire and non-uniformed employees retire,” Auditor General DeFoor said.
