State, Townships Preserve Farmland
The state Department of Agriculture has announced the preservation of 1,953 acres on 28 farms in 16 counties through the state’s Farmland Preservation Program, which protects farms from future residential, commercial, or industrial development. The newly preserved farms are located in townships in Adams, Beaver, Berks, Blair, Bucks, Cumberland, Franklin, Lancaster, Lawrence, Lebanon, Luzerne, Lycoming, Monroe, Montgomery, Tioga, and Westmoreland counties. Several townships, including Union Township in Adams County and Lower Frederick Township in Montgomery County, invested township funds to preserve farms in their communities.
