Take Simple Steps to Protect Your Township (and Yourself!) Online

October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month, a global effort led by the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA). As America’s Cyber Defense Agency, CISA works to promote best practices to help Americans protect themselves from cyberattacks at home and at work. Here are four easy ways to stay safe online by taking simple tips at both work and home to stay secure when connected online:

  • Use Strong Passwords: Strong passwords are long, random, and unique and include all four character types (uppercase, lowercase, numbers, and symbols). Password managers are a powerful tool to help you create strong passwords for each of your accounts.
  • Turn on Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA): More sites are requiring this step as more than a password is needed to protect online accounts. Enabling MFA makes you significantly less likely to get hacked, as MFA requires a code each time you log-in which is sent to an email or phone number listed on the account. MFA is recommended for all online accounts, especially email, social media, and financial accounts. And never share this code, particularly if asked online (even by someone you trust…their account may have been compromised).
  • Recognize & Report Phishing: Phishing occurs when criminals try to get us to open harmful links, emails, or attachments that could request personal information or infect devices. Phishing messages usually come in the form of an email, text, direct message on social media, or even a phone call. These messages are designed to look like they come from a trusted person or organization. Be cautious of unsolicited messages asking for personal information, even if it appears to be from someone you trust. Avoid sharing sensitive information or credentials with unknown sources. Report phishing attempts and delete the message.
  • Update Software: Ensuring your software is up to date is the best way to make sure you have the latest security patches and updates on your devices. Regularly check for updates if automatic updates are unavailable.
