Pa. COVID-19 Cases, Hospitalizations Increase
27,021 new cases of COVID-19 were reported last week, a 57% increase compared to the prior week. The statewide COVID-19 total case count now stands at 1,294,730 and cases have now increased for seven weeks in a row. Despite being 5th in population, the commonwealth now ranks 39th in cases per 100,000 nationally, with Florida, Louisiana, and Mississippi continuing to make up the top three. Every state reported a high rate of transmission last week.
The number of COVID-19 hospitalizations in Pennsylvania increased for the sixth week in a row to 1,768 from 1,463. 476 patients are in the ICU compared to the previous week’s 391. Total deaths in Pennsylvania have reached 28,213 with 137 new deaths were reported this week.
Pennsylvania’s statewide percent-positivity rate increased for the eighth week in a row from 6.9% to 7.8%. Four counties now have rates less than 5% (down from seven last week), 30 counties have rates of 5% to less than 10% (down from 46 last week), 32 counties have rates of 10% to less than 20% (up from 14 last week); and one county has a rate of more than 30%.
