Congress Gives Retired Police Officers, Other Government Workers a Raise

President Biden signed a new law, the Social Security Fairness Act, which gives 3 million retired government workers, including police officers, teachers, firefighters, and their surviving spouses, full Social Security benefits. Many of these groups did not fully pay into Social Security due to opt out provisions for government workers with qualifying pensions and as such, had their S.S. benefits decreased.

The act does not affect the exemption from Social Security taxes for police officers in an IRS-approved pension plan when voluntary or mandatory Social Security coverage took effect. However, it does eliminate benefit reductions for current officers participating in such plans.
