Environmental Justice Mapping Tool
Starting September 16, townships can use the new PennEnviroScreen mapping tool to help determine if state Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) permitting projects are located within a defined environmental justice area. These areas are characterized by increased pollution burden and sensitive or vulnerable populations based on demographic and environmental data. The mapping tool shows these areas as dark blue fields, many of which are located in townships.
The Shapiro Administration is adopting an updated Environmental Justice Policy, which expands environmental safeguards throughout the Commonwealth. The updated EJ policy directs how DEP’s inspection, compliance, and enforcement efforts can better include concerns of communities most at risk from pollution and other environmental impacts.
