Gasoline Consumption Remains Below 2019 Levels
The Independent Fiscal Office released a research brief showing that more than three years after the height of the pandemic (2020), gasoline consumption remains well below pre-pandemic levels (2019). The report note that this is partially due to the continuation of hybrid and remote work schedules for some workers, while increased vehicle fuel efficiency and the continued shift to alternatively fueled vehicles continues to play a role. Of note, according to a recent U.S. Census Bureau Pulse survey, 26% of Pennsylvania workers 18 or older work from home one or more days per week. In contrast, diesel fuel consumption has fully recovered and now surpasses pre-pandemic levels. Click here to read the research brief. This spells trouble for future liquid fuels allocations to be used for local road/bridge repairs.
