IFO Releases Brief on Homeowner Property Taxes by County
The Independent Fiscal Office released a brief titled 2022 Property Tax Burden by County. The brief examines data from the IRS and property tax data from the state Departments of Education and Community and Economic Development to estimate the 2022 homeowner-renter property tax burden by county. Commercial, industrial, and agricultural property were not part of the analysis.
Statewide, Pennsylvania homeowners paid $18.4 billion in property taxes statewide, with over 71% of that being local school taxes. Nearly all counties in the top 10 are in eastern PA and many share a border with New Jersey. Counties in the bottom 10 are in the northern and central regions of the state and all are rural.
