PA Gas Tax to Decrease in 2024 

The state Department of Revenue posted its annual notice for the gas tax rates for 2024. The tax will decrease for 2024 as the 2023 average wholesale price for all grades of gasoline and diesel fuel was $2.84 per gallon, down from $3.17 per gallon in 2022. For gasoline, this means that the tax will decrease from 61.1 to 57.6 cents per gallon and diesel will decrease from 78.5 to 74.1 cents per gallon. 

This tax is the source of liquid fuels funds, and a decrease in the tax should equate to a decrease in 2025 distributions received by municipalities. However, the total amount in the Liquid Fuels Fund will depend on total gallons sold in Pennsylvania during 2024.
