SEPTA Proposes Fare Increases, Route Cuts in Transportation Funding Discussions
The Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA), which serves five counties in the Philadelphia area and is one of the largest transit systems in the country, is proposing a significant fare increase for its customers effective January 1, 2025. Service cuts of 20% across all modes are also expected, with details to be finalized.
SEPTA, along with other transit agencies, have been pushing for increased state funding, receiving a one-time increase as part of this year’s budget package. While the transit agencies have support in the House, the Senate majority wants to see new funding streams and funding for roads and bridges as part of a transportation funding package. PSATS believes that the commonwealth must maintain a predictable and reliable local funding method to maintain our roads and bridges and that local funding should be part of any transportation funding discussion.
