State’s EMS High School Pilot Program to Expand
Patterned after the State Police Camp Cadet program, the state Department of Health (DOH) conducted several pilot programs that gave high school students with an interest in the EMS profession an opportunity for interactive learning and real-world practice. DOH’s Bureau of Emergency Medical Services created three pilot programs aimed at inspiring high school students to consider future careers in the emergency responder workforce. This summer, more than 50 young Pennsylvanians took part in these immersive camps in Carbon, Greene, and Huntingdon counties, funded by the state Fireworks Tax.
Following the success of the camps, the program will be expanded for the upcoming year. A Request for Applications will be announced this fall to provide funding for EMS organizations across the state interested in hosting similar programs throughout Pennsylvania next summer. The real success of the program will be measured when these students link up with squads for more hands-on opportunities.
