Township Maintenance Vehicles Can Use Green/Amber Lighting for Safety and Visibility
On July 17, Governor Shapiro signed into law Act 78 of 2024, which allows townships and contractors working on townships’ behalf to use flashing or revolving green lights in addition to flashing or revolving yellow (amber) lights on maintenance vehicles. PennDOT recently provided a rulemaking in the Sept. 7, 2024 edition of the Pennsylvania Bulletin to set temporary regulations for townships which choose to add green lights to their maintenance vehicles. Please note that townships are not required to install green lights.
According to research conducted in other states, the human eye can identify green lights more clearly and brightly than traditional yellow or amber lighting. Flashing or revolving green lights are a proven technology utilized by other states, including Michigan, Maryland, and Wisconsin, as an option to make township vehicles more visible and enhance safety to construction and maintenance operations.
