Township Website Disability Compliance
Many townships have recently received calls regarding their websites’ or social media pages’ compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Earlier this summer, the Department of Justice announced a new rule with specific requirements to ensure that web content is accessible to people with disabilities. Some of these requirements include ensuring captions are provided in live audio content and including headings within web pages to describe content and help users find information more quickly.
Please note that townships with a population of up to 49,999 residents have until April 26, 2027, to make any necessary changes to their websites to ensure accessibility. Townships with a population of 50,000 or more must ensure compliance by April 24, 2026. For more information, visit the ADA’s website, which includes a fact sheet about this rule. PSATS has provided training on these requirements and will provide more opportunities before the rule takes effect.
